Figured Out

My son's school bus, basically, comes when it feels like it. It's arrival time supposed to be 7:08, but it comes at 7:40, 7:15, and sometimes, right on time. At the beginning, I thought I had it figured out. Since it had been picking up the kids between 7:12 - 7:15am, we knew we could leave the house no later than 7:05am. Perfect. We had our morning schedule worked out, the timing down right to the minute.

All of a sudden, the driver decides to change up on us. Instead of coming in that 4 - 7 minute window, now, she comes when she comes. And we have to be ready. So unpredictable. To make sure we're not rushing and my son doesn't miss the bus, we have to be in the car leaving the apartment by 7:00am. If we are later than that time, we'll run the risk of missing the bus.

“You don’t even know what tomorrow will bring — what your life will be! For you are like smoke that appears for a little while, then vanishes.” (James 4:14 HCSB)

It's safe to say that sometimes we think we have this thing called LIFE all figured out. We make our daily plans, oftentimes without consulting God. We coast through our day pridefully assuming "Yep, I got this figured out. I'm in control. I hold my future in my hands. I'm in charge of my life." Boy, are we way off. Because before we know it, surprise! Our life has changed.

The bottom of our world has just dropped out. Series of unfortunate events have made our perfect (but not so perfect), planned world crumble into chaos. We've heard this saying: "we're either in a storm, coming out of one, or going right in to it." And it's true. Just take a look at your life right now. Let it be your compass for recognizing which season you're in. Are you in the calm before the storm, rainy season, or is it summertime? Even still, soon the weather will change. And once again, we'll be reminded that we are not in control.

So what do we do when LIFE (GOD) shows us we're not in charge? How do we response and where do we turn when the path we're traveling on brings us to a fork in the road? What do we do when the weather quickly turns?

1. ADJUST. We adjust by having a grateful attitude. Adjust by being grateful for whatever season God has us in (Ecc. 3:1-8).

2. ADMIT. Admit that we cannot control LIFE. Admit that we don't know everything. Admit that we're not God (Jer. 29:11; Ecc. 6:10).

3. REMEMBER. We remember that seasons change (Ecc. 3:1-8). Therefore, things will eventually change for the better. They always do. Nothing stays the same. Remember God's promise in Romans 8:28.

4. TRUST. Most importantly, we trust God, not ourselves. We look to Him for direction (Prov. 3:5-6). We trust His sovereignty knowing that He is the Creator who is in complete control. Since He is sovereign and is in control, we're in good hands. No need to worry or be anxious (Phil. 4:6).

“Here’s what you ought to say: “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that”’ (James 4:15 CEB).

My sister, LIFE is so unpredictable, and we don't have any idea what's around the corner or what tomorrow brings. Whatever may come, we cannot rely on our own abilities to navigate through. Howbeit, we can trust in an omniscient God who is everywhere and knows all things.

“Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, to God who alone is wise, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen” (I Timothy 1:17 NKJV).
