Legacy

“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal” (Matt. 6:19-20, NKJV)

As a mother, I want to leave a legacy for my children, a legacy that no one can take away. If I should die today, I want to leave my children and my children’s children something that cannot be destroyed, stolen, broken, lost, or fade away.

I want my children to graduate from college, be financially taken care of and not want for anything. I want them to have opportunities to visit different cities and far away countries. I want my children to see and experience things beyond their wildest dreams. But if they never have an opportunity to do those things, if the Lord should end their lives before those things are accomplished, I want it to be said that I left my children the greatest legacy.

I want my children to know that I left them something special that cannot be destroyed; thieves cannot steal, something that can’t be vanish or ever fade away. I want to leave my children something unique that no money in the world can buy, a special treasure.

My children (Kourtney & Kaleb) and my godchildren (DeDe & Deven)

The most important thing that a mother can do for her children; the most wonderful legacy she can leave them is the Word of God (Deut. 11:19). Mothers can share Jesus with their children. We can share God’s love story, the Bible, and tell them how the Creator displayed His great love for the world by giving His Son (John 3:16).

The greatest treasure, the ultimate legacy that we as mothers can ever leave our children is Jesus Christ. Those other things, such as money and material things are good, but they won’t last.

As we work and plan to make a better life for our children, let’s not forget about their souls. Let’s not forget to share God’s Word and His Son, which is most important. We want our children to know the Word of God and know that Jesus is the best thing they will ever need in this life.

Mothers, when all those other things diminish, dissolve, or disappear Jesus will still be standing. Let’s leave our children a legacy that will last forever! Jesus is the matchless treasure – gift that we can give our children.
